The Lisle Letters

The Lisle Letters are a collection of correspondence to and from members of the Lisle family. The correspondence runs from 1533-1540 and contains a wealth of information about all aspects of life in that era. Muriel St. Clare Byrne has transcribed and published a large selection of these letters in a six-volume set, which I have combed for all references to clothing and textiles. I have databased these references, which number in the hundreds, and am using them as a source for research. My paper on children's clothing in the letters appears in Medieval Clothing and Textiles 3 (http://www.boydell.co.uk/43832917.HTM), but the source is rich enough to support several more projects.
