Feet!
The
technical director built the wooden frame of this chair, and I "upholstered"
it, carving out space in foam rubber for the actor's torso and legs. His arms
slid into the arms of the chair, which were mobile. His face showed through
a hole in the upright cushion, but this was covered with an antimacassar until
he began to speak. Most audience members were surprised, as they had walked
past the chair to get to their seats and assumed it to have, like most chairs,
a less voluble nature. The chair was also on casters, and I made shoes with
upholstery covering the toes so that the actor could have mobility, traction,
and continuity.
